Aug. 24–LIMA — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will be addressing a proposal for new Class 1 non-hazardous wastewater injection wells at Husky Lima Refinery during a public information session Sept. 6.
During the information session, Ohio EPA representatives will discuss the draft permit details and answer questions about the injection wells from the public. The session will begin at 6 p.m. at Lima Municipal Center, 50 Town Square.
The idea behind the proposal started as a way to help Husky Lima Refinery with its ongoing crude flexibility project.
The purpose of the project is to reduce the amount of fresh water used through water recycling, according to Kim Guttormson, Husky Lima Refinery spokeswoman.
If approved, the refinery will implement a water recycling process that will allow treated wastewater to be filtered and softened.
That water will then be put through reverse osmosis to create a water stream in the refinery’s boiler system, according to Guttormson.
The concentrated amounts of sodium, iron, sulfate and phosphate minerals, and ions generated through the recycled water will be disposed of via the injection wells. This process has been called appropriate by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, according to Guttormson.
“Lima Refining Company anticipates using oil with higher concentrations of selenium,” said Anthony Chenault, Ohio EPA media coordinator. “Rather than discharging the new byproducts into the Ottawa River, the facility is proposing to utilize injection wells.”
There will be a hearing following the information session where the public will have the opportunity to submit on the record comments about the permits.
Draft permit copies can be found at the Lima Public Library and the Ohio EPA’s Central Office. For appointments at the Ohio EPA Central Office call 614-644-2752 or at the Ohio EPA’s Northwest District Office at 419-352-8461.
If the permits are approved, Lima Husky Refinery will acquire three new injection wells at its property on 1150 S. Metcalf St.
