Sept. 08–A St. Joseph gasoline station at a high-profile intersection is replacing its underground storage tanks as part of an ongoing remodel.
City Star at 2130 Frederick Ave. has been working on removing the aged tanks and putting in new ones, according to an official with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
“They sent us a notice that they were going to take the tanks out of service,” said Justin Buckler, an environmental scientist with the Missouri DNR.
Buckler said the department approved the request. From there, he said soil and tank water samples are taken and sent to the DNR.
“Then we review that data … tell them what they need to do to address any contamination we find during the tank closure,” he said.
Buckler said his understanding is that the property owner decided to change the tanks on his own, and the project has nothing to do with a gas leak that occurred two years ago.
In November 2016, City Star experienced a failed seal on a pump to a tank, which resulted in a release of fuel. The fuel migrated underground to the dental office of Mark Bagby at 2001 Frederick Ave. The owner of the gas station took immediate measures to take the malfunctioning equipment out of service and arranged for cleanup and repairs.
Bagby eventually closed his St. Joseph practice, and the building has since been torn down.
At the time of the demolition, Bagby told the News-Press Now that he no longer owned the building on Frederick Avenue. Buchanan County records show HIK LLC now owns the lot at 2001 Frederick Ave. as well as the neighboring property at 2005 Frederick Ave. HIK also is listed as the property owner for the City Star gasoline station.
The gas station completely renovated the interior of its store this year.
The city helped with removing the canopy above the pumps and new pumps will be configured differently once the business reopens.
The owners of City Star could not be reached for comment.
