Nov. 12–Temperatures across the Topeka area aren’t the only thing that are dropping.
So are gas prices.
According to AAA Kansas, the average price for a gallon of unleaded fuel in the Sunflower State on Monday was $2.47, down nine cents over a week ago and 27 cents in the past month.
Kansas tied for the fourth largest gas price decrease in the nation this week, according to AAA Kansas spokesman Shawn Steward.
After gas prices for much of 2018 were 15 to 30 percent higher than last year, prices at the pump are now in the single-digit percentages higher than 2017, he said.
A year ago, Steward said, the average Kansas gas price was $2.41, which was just six cents — or 2 percent — higher than Monday’s prices. In Lawrence, he said, the price on Monday was actually 2 percent less than a year ago at this time.
“Just in time for Thanksgiving holiday road trips, motorists have a lot to be thankful for at the fuel pumps,” Steward said in a news release. “This trend of lower gas prices has been ongoing for a month or so, and it is very welcome to the many Kansans who will be hitting the road to visit friends and family next week.”
Steward noted that Kansas currently has the 12th cheapest gas prices in America. Wichita, at $2.35 a gallon, checked in with the 26th lowest gas prices among metro areas nationwide this week.
“Prices could plunge even lower, especially if we see a surge in gasoline production after refiners fully restart units from the fall maintenance season,” Steward said. “Also driving down pump prices is the fact that crude oil is selling under $65/bbl, a rare sight this year.”
Of the 10 Kansas cities regularly highlighted by AAA Kansas, all saw significant price declines this week. Lawrence at minus-14 cents, Pittsburg at minus-12 cents, and Salina and Wichita at minus -12 cents saw the biggest price drops.
According to AAA, this week’s gas price extremes in Kansas were a high of $3 per gallon in Elkhart in Morton County and a low of $2.23 a gallon in Maize in Sedgwick County.
According to GasBuddy.com, Topeka prices for unleaded gasoline on Monday ranged from $2.45 to $2.69.
