The driver of the cargo truck was northbound on I-5 north of Laguna Boulevard about 5:30 a.m. when the crash occurred. California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Michael Bradley said that the big rig was slowed and then stopped for an earlier crash in the same direction on I-5 when the rig was rear-ended.
A 31-year-old man from Hollister and a 21-year-old man from Gilroy in the cargo truck died at the scene.
CHP Sgt. Aaron Rohner said that the big rig was in the slow lane when the crash occurred. The big rig driver could feel the cargo truck hit his trailer.
“After feeling that impact, he didn’t realize how bad the collision was but he moved his vehicle out of the No. 3 lane onto the shoulder,” Rohner said. “Once he got out of his vehicle he realized that he was dragging another vehicle.”
Northbound I-5 was backed during the morning commute as traffic slowly made its way past the crash. All lanes re-opened at around 8:15 a.m., according to the CHP.
