Aug. 18–New legislation signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner will require gas storage field owners to notify communities if there is a risk natural gas leaks could expose them to contaminated water.
The law also will mandate annual gas storage field inspections by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The inspections will check for deficiencies or failures that could lead to future contamination. The state will establish what constitutes an “incident.”
This legislation comes in response to a gas leak that occurred in the Mahomet Aquifer in Champaign County in 2016 that contaminated private wells of many residents. The contamination was so bad residents reported they could light their water on fire.
The bill, HB4746, will go into effect Jan. 1.
