The driver of the cargo truck was traveling northbound on I-5 north of Laguna Boulevard at about 5:30 a.m. when the crash occurred. The smaller truck hit the back of the big rig trailer, killing two people inside the cargo truck.
California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Michael Bradley said that the big rig was slowed for an earlier crash in the same direction on I-5 when the rig was rear-ended. The two people in the cargo truck died at the scene.
“Traffic will be slowed for an hour or two for the investigation,” said Bradley.
Northbound I-5 was backed up during the morning commute as traffic slowly made its way past the crash. Commuters were advised to take alternate routes.
