Aug. 16–The bodies believed to be of a pregnant Colorado woman and her two young children have been found on the property where her husband was employed, authorities said Thursday.
Chris Watts, facing charges of killing his wife along with his two young daughters, reportedly led investigator’s to Shanann Watts’ body. The bodies of Bella, 4, and 3-year-old Celeste were also found.
Watts was taken into custody Wednesday in the town of Frederick, about 30 miles north of Denver. He is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
“As horrible as this outcome is, our role now is to do everything we can to determine exactly what occurred,” said John Camper, director of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
The bodies were found on the property of Anadarko Petroleum, one of Colorado’s largest oil and gas drillers where Chris Watts used to work.
Watts is being held at the Weld County Jail, the Frederick Police Department tweeted early Thursday. In addition to first-degree murder charges, he is facing three counts of tampering with evidence.
Before his arrest, Chris Watts told KMGH that his wife returned home from a business trip at 2 a.m. on Monday. When asked if they argued, he told the station: “We had an emotional conversation, I’ll leave it at that. I just want them back. I just want them to come back.”
Frankie Rzucek, Shanann’s brother, wrote on Facebook that he just wants “30 seconds alone with that heartless psychopath.”
“May Satan have mercy on his soul,” he wrote. “The cops drug their feet. He was the only one with them and backed his truck into the garage. Doesn’t take a genius to know who was suspect. My blood is boiling and the pain and anger and sadness I have in my heart. Nothing absolutely nothing would get in my way of taking away his life like he did mine and my ENTIRE FAMILY.”
A friend of Shanann’s said she became concerned when the Frederick, Colo., resident did not show up for a doctor’s appointment or answer her phone on Monday.
Shanann was 15 weeks pregnant. She posted a photo on Facebook in June of texts with her husband after sending him a sonogram. He replied that he loved the baby already. She posted: “I love Chris! He’s the best dad us girls could ask for.”
A neighbor of her parents in North Carolina, where Shanann is from, said she had recently visited Aberdeen.
“She was here for about three weeks. I talked her a couple times,” Joe Beach told The Associated Press. “We were talking about general things, about how her two girls were doing and how life was out in Colorado. She didn’t give me an indication that there was anything wrong. She seemed pretty happy.”
