Factory Orders Up in December
The Commerce Department reported that factory orders rose 2.3% in December, up from a 1.7% gain in November. It was the biggest increase since July and was welcome news in light of the struggling economy. Orders for durable, or big-ticket goods that are expected to last at least three years, increased 5% in December, up from a 0.5% advance in November. Demand for nondurable goods, including clothing, textiles and beverages, dipped 0.4%, compared with a 3% jump in November. For all of 2007, factory orders rose 1.4%. It was the worst performance since 2002, when the economy was struggling to recover from the 2001 recession. In 2006, factory orders increased 5.1%.
