Consumer Confidence at All-Time Low in December
Consumer confidence fell to an all-time low in December, according to a closely watched index, as rising unemployment and a spiraling economy took a big toll on consumer psyches. The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index fell to 38 in December from a revised 44.7 in November. The index stood at 90.6 in December 2007. The Conference Board's Present Situation index, which measures how respondents feel about current business conditions and employment prospects, fell to 29.4 in December from 42.3 in November. The Expectations Index, which measures how respondents feel about future business conditions, fell to 43.8 from 46.2 in November. Respondents saying jobs are "hard to get" rose to 42% in December from 37.1% in November, while those claiming jobs are "plentiful" decreased to 6.2% from 8.7%. The index is based on a survey of 5,000 households.
