Pending Home Sales Down in May
The National Association of Realtors reported that its Pending Home Sales index declined 4.7% in May to 84.7 from an upwardly revised 88.9 in April. The index was down a whopping 14% from May 2007, an indication of how severe the housing slump has become. The index had jumped 7% in April as declining home prices produced some bargain hunters. But May's decline suggests a turnaround has not yet begun. "The overall decline in contract signings suggests we are not out of the woods by any means," said Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist. Pending home sales declined in all regions. They were down 1.3% in the West, 2.9% in the Northeast, 6% in the Midwest, and 7.1% in the South. In addition, the NAR lowered its existing-home sales outlook for 2008, saying it now expects sales of 5.31 million, down from the 5.39 million forecast in April.
