Rising Orders for Non-Durables Lift Overall Factory Orders
Factory orders rose 1.1% in April, the Commerce Department reported, as strong demand for non-durables offset a dip in orders for durable goods. The April gain followed an upwardly revised increase of 1.5% in March. Excluding transportation items, factory orders posted back-to-back 2.6% gains in March and April, suggesting the industrial sector is still fairly robust. Orders for durable goods, items like cars and refrigerators intended to last three years or more, declined by a revised 0.6% in April, the government reported. However, orders for nondurable goods, such as paper products and food items, jumped 2.8%.
