Retail Sales Sluggish in March
The Commerce Department reported that retail sales edged up 0.2% in March, following a 0.4% drop in February, as consumers worried about a shaky job market, a credit crunch, declining home values and rising fuel and food prices refused to splurge. Excluding a 1.1% jump in sales at gasoline service stations, reflecting higher prices, retail sales would have been flat last month. Sales at department stores and general merchandise stores fell 0.6%, while sales at apparel chains declined 0.5%. Since Easter came early this year, at a time when much of the nation was blanketed by cold weather, these chains lost out on sales of spring apparel. Sales were also down at furniture stores, building supply stores and appliance stores, all areas hurt by the housing slump. Sales were up 0.3% at grocery stores, and 0.2% at auto dealerships.
