Factory Orders Down For Second Straight Month
The Commerce Department reported that factory orders declined 1.3% in February, about double the downturn that economists were expecting. The decline followed an even bigger 2.3% drop in January, the largest decline in five months. The falloff in demand was widespread, with steep declines in orders for motor vehicles, heavy machinery and iron and steel. The government report showed that demand for durable goods, items expected to last at least three years, fell 1.1%, while orders for non-durable goods, products such as oil and chemicals, declined 1.5%. Orders for transportation products rose 1.8%, however, spurred by a 5.1% gain in orders for commercial airplanes. Orders for motor vehicles fell 2%.
