Employers Hire 162,000 Workers in March
The Labor Department said employers added 162,000 jobs in
March, the largest job gain in three years, a sign that the
labor market is turning around. The nation’s unemployment
rate, however, remained at 9.7%. More Americans entered the
workforce in March, which prevented the gain in jobs from
reducing the jobless rate. While the gain in jobs in March –
which included 48,000 temporary workers hired for the U.S.
Census – suggests an economic recovery is underway, many
economists expect the unemployment rate to remain high this
year.
Manufacturers added 17,000 jobs in March, the third
straight month of gains. Temporary help services added
40,000, while health care added 27,000. Leisure and
hospitality added 22,000 and retail added 14,900. Even the
construction industry, one of the hardest hit by the
recession, saw a pick-up of 15,000 jobs. Financial activity
jobs fell by 21,000, while the information industry suffered
a loss of 12,000. The average work week increased to 34
hours from 33.9, a positive sign. The government also
revised January's job total to show a gain of 14,000, up
from a previously reported loss of 26,000. February's job
numbers were also revised higher by 22,000 to show a loss of
14,000. The economy has now added jobs in only three months
since the recession began in December 2007.
