Factory Orders up in February
The Commerce Department reported that factory orders grew 0.6% in February, the tenth gain in the past 11 months. However, it was the smallest gain since August 2009 and followed an upwardly revised 2.5% increase in January. Inventories held by manufacturers grew a modest 0.5%, the government said, a sign that companies are cautious in replenishing stockpiles due to concerns about future sales. The modest gain in inventories indicates that the lift that manufacturing gave to the overall economy in the 4Q is tapering off. Orders for big-ticket durable goods increased 0.6% in February. Machinery orders jumped 5.1%, while orders for commercial aircraft surged 33%. However, orders for motor vehicles and parts declined 1.7%, reflecting continued troubles for the auto industry. Meanwhile, orders for nondurables, such as chemicals, apparel and food, grew 0.3%.
