Retail Sales Slip in December
The Commerce Department said retail sales declined 0.3%
in December compared to November, a disappointment following
reports from numerous major department stores, discounters
and apparel chains the week before that showed sales gains
for many. However, the government’s report tracks a much
broader sector of retailing, including sales at gas
stations, restaurants and auto dealerships. On the bright
side, however, sales jumped 5.4% from December 2008, when
consumers were dramatically scaling back on purchases amid
the recession. The 0.3% decline in December was the first
setback since September, when sales fell 2%.
For December, sales of autos dropped by 0.8%. Excluding
autos, sales overall fell 0.2%. Sales at specialty apparel
chains fell 0.6%, while sales at general merchandise stores,
a category that includes big retailers such as Walmart, were
down by 0.8%. Sales at department stores were flat, while
sales at furniture and home furnishing chains climbed 0.3%.
Sales at electronics and appliance stores declined 2.6% and
sales at hardware stores dipped 0.4%. Sales at gasoline
stations grew 1%, while sales at building materials and
garden supply stores dipped 0.4%. Sales at food and beverage
stores fell 0.8%, but jumped 1.6% at sporting goods, book
and music stores.
