Excluding Autos, Retail Sales up in September
The Commerce Department reported that retail sales fell 1.5% in September, largely due to a big drop in auto sales, although sales outside autos were up. Auto sales plunged 10.4%, due to tough comparisons with August sales, which got a boost from the government’s popular “Cash for Clunkers” program. However, excluding autos, retail sales grew 0.5% in September. Sales at gasoline stations rose 1.1% in September, partially reflecting higher prices. Excluding gas and auto sales, retail sales increased 0.4%. Furniture store sales jumped 1.4%, amid signs that the housing industry is starting to recover. Sales at general merchandise stores, a category that includes big retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target, increased 0.9%. Sales at department stores edged up 0.4% and apparel chains posted a 0.5% gain.
